Nothing bad had happened.

He had long since developed a suspicion of days that passed without visible injury and still left a residue. It was one thing to feel bad after some identifiable humiliation, loss, or disappointment. It was another to walk through a routine exchange in a carpeted office under fluorescent lights and come out feeling as though some private organ had been lightly mishandled.
